Joaquim Vayreda

Parc de la Ciutadella

Sculptor: Manuel Fuxà, signed
Architect original pedestal: Pedro Falqués
Materials: White marble on stone base
Inauguration: November 21, 1915

Like the Barcelona City Council had paid tribute to the actor Leon Fontova with a bust two years ago, the same happened with the Board of Museums and the painter Joaquin Vayreda (Girona, 1843 - Olot, 1894). They saw fit to honor him and commissioned the architect Pere Falqués and sculptor Manuel Fuxà the pedestal and bust, respectively. He was released on November 21, 1915 in the gardens of the Palace of Fine Arts, survivor of the Universal Exhibition of 1888 and when he disappeared in the decade of the forties, the bust moved to the front of the Catalan Parliament, then simply Museum of Modern Art. Many years later, on the site of the Palace of Fine Arts, the new courts rose.
