Lepanto

Passeig de Colom (Drassanes)

Sculptor: Joaquim Ros Sabaté, signed
Materials: Bronze with steel plate element on stone base
Inauguration: October 7, 1971

This monument is one of three located in the port of Barcelona who made the sculptor Joaquim Ros Sabaté with sailor reason. The three represent a sailing boat plying the waves, all metal, and are quite similar to each other.

They are dedicated to athletes of the sea, at Pier Wood; the tribute to the creators of skate sailing in the spring, and this, reminiscent of the victory at the Battle of Lepanto, to the Drassanes.

Both this monument as dedicated to sports sea, stands with two years apart, were an initiative of the Assembly of Captains Yacht. It was inaugurated on October 7, 1971 and has always suffered from the disadvantage that the base is not very high, which facilitates pranks and often some element missing. Sailing galley that crosses over the waves of iron has always been the most affected. The model used by the sculptor was playing the royal galley of Juan de Austria, is in the Maritime Museum.

The inauguration was attended by the then Prince Juan Carlos and four ministers, including three soldiers of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
