In 1896 it was decided to build a monument in memory of Mayor Francesc de Paula Rius i Taulet, under whose mandate had taken place the exhibition of 1888. a contest won the tandem Pere architect and sculptor Manuel Falqués Fuxà was convened. The first stone was laid on 26 September 1897 at the gates of the Citadel Park, at the end of Hall of San Juan, Lluís Companys current ride. Four years later, on September 27, 1901, the monument was inaugurated in the presence of some officials who had participated in the famous event, as Carles Pirozzini. He responded on behalf of the city mayor Joan Amat and Sormani. For some reason, Eusebi Arnau participated in the work, modeling matron who represents the city of Barcelona.
