When in October 20, 1936, the Generalitat, in the middle of the Civil War, made public the decision to transform the old medieval Atarazanas, until then military barracks, into the Maritime Museum, it was clear that the memory of the military and Catalan historian Antoni de Capmany and Montpalau (Barcelona, 1742 - Cádiz, 1813), author of the famous "Memoirs on the navy", trade and ancient arts of the city of Barcelona published in 1779. A room of the museum was dedicated to Capmany, and the gardens, built in 1944, also received his name. Three years later he put on a bust of Capmany, the work of Frederic Marès. It was inaugurated on June 15, 1947.
