Barcelona 1998
Plaça dels Àngels
Sculptor: Eduardo Chillida, signed
Materials: refractory clay in black and white
Inauguration: September 22, 1998
First mural made by the sculptor Eduardo Chillida, of remarkable dimensions (15.55 meters long and 6 meters high), made of 416 plates of refractory concrete, painted with copper oxide with white and ocher tones. Chillida chose the wall next to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), which commissioned it. Another mural by Keith Haring had to be taken from the same wall, which is preserved in the back of the museum. Chillida insisted on putting three meters on the ground to avoid graffiti paint. The work was carried out in a workshop in Grasse (France) and was inaugurated by the 1998 Mercè Festival, in the presence of the Mayor of Barcelona, Joan Clos; of the Minister of Culture, Joan Maria Pujals; of the president of Sara Lee Corporation - which manufactures the Wonderbra bras and the underpants - Steve MacMillan, who had paid for the mural; of the president of the MACBA Foundation, Leopoldo Rodés; of the painter Antoni Tàpies, and of the art critic Daniel Giralt-Miracle, among other personalities.
